Foot Pain

Pain in diabetic foot is for to many causes.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
Shooting Pain may be associated with numbness, burning, and tingling in peripheral neuropathy.sometimes your feet may become sensitive to the lightest touch(dysesthesia)
Neuropathic pain may be difficult to manage even with regular pain killers as the problem is with the nerves themselves There is a treatment protocol to follow for the neuropathic pain.

Heel pain is something we often hear from our patients. It can occur at the bottom, back, front or along the sides of the heel.
. The most common cause of heel pain is PLANTAR FASCITIS. This condition may be due to abnormalities in walking pattern that causes too much stress on the heel bone like walking, running or jumping on hard surfaces, prolonged people of standing, wearing wrong foot wear, obesity etc.

All foot pain patients need further evaluation by the foot specialist to rule out any major problems in the foot say like CELLULITIS,
NECROTIZING FASCITIS,
ABSCESS,
CHARCOT FOOT or
OBSTRUCTION OF BLOOD FLOW TO THE FEET(ISCHEMIA).

Treatment is treating the cause.
The podiatric surgeon first examine your foot and may order for investigations like x Ray.. Sometimes MRI to find out the cause .
You must keep your blood sugar level within the target range.
Over-the-counter medicines may help alleviate mild to moderate pain.
Topical ointments, sprays and over the counter medications.

  • Rest your feet by staying away from work
  • Use an ice pack to reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation
  • Try some stretching exercises that reduce pain in nerves and make it feel better.
  • Use shoes that support the arch of your foot with Customized inserts .
  • Physiotherapy and regular foot exercises will prevent recurrence.

Early treatment with anti-inflammatory medications and injections over the pain site can treat your pain effectively without the need of surgery.
If the pain is still there for several months, you may need major intervention like surgery as a last resort to treat itl pain permanently.
